Cheap Eats: $5.55 Sushi Wednesdays At Reasor’s 

Despite a recent corporate buyout, the weekly special hasn’t changed much

Lately, everything is too expensive. Eggs are luxury items, food is becoming fashion, and tariffs are pushing food importers towards the dread task of having a conversation with the President of the United States. Bleak stuff. Thus, we here at The Pickup are taking it upon ourselves to showcase for our readers the sleeper hits of cheap, decent food, where you can get a good meal for a bargain price. How Much? $5.55

Great sushi is hard to find in a landlocked city like ours, and, before the quibbles begin, I am not about to argue with you that Reasor’s sushi is Great Sushi. What I will tell you, discerning reader, is this: on Wednesdays, you can get the aforementioned Reasor's sushi for five dollars and fifty-five cents. 

As we all know, when something is five dollars and fifty-five cents, its greatness (or lack thereof) becomes a secondary attribute to its price—or, as we might say, its five-dollars-and-fifty-five-cents-ness. The five-dollars-and-fifty-five-cents-ness of Reasor’s sushi, it turns out, is a price story on par with Arizona Tea or the CostCo hot dog: An Instagram post from 2015 announced Sushi Wednesday for the astonishing price of $4.99. 

Fifty-six cents! Ten years ago! A fifty-six cent increase from 2015 to 2025! A miracle of economics, Sushi Wednesday is. Confoundingly, Sushi Wednesday might be the only item at Reasor’s that hasn’t suffered drastically from inflation. If you mention this to Reasor’s corporate, I will find you, and I will make you pay.

How can this be? I don’t know, and I don’t want to know. I only know that tomorrow, I will be walking my happy ass into Reasor’s, picking up a small plastic container of Philadelphia roll, and bringing it to The Pickup’s office, whereon I will devour it. 

Is the ginger good? No. Is the wasabi good? Not really. Is the soy sauce good? Yeah, it’s fine; it’s soy sauce! More importantly, the sushi is moderately-to-very fresh, the flavors are, uh, normal, and the whole thing holds your mortal coil together for yet one more stretch between meals. 

One container of Sushi Wednesday sushi tends to satiate me, but I also tend to buy a second container anyway, just to have a leftover snack, and maybe to even—gasp!—have the same thing for dinner. I know, I know; the decadence! What can I say; I enjoy the finer things. 

And I know, you might be asking me, Zack, why are you posting this on a Tuesday? Wouldn’t a Wednesday be more appropriate? To which I say, No! I’m giving you the heads-up for tomorrow. Plus, it’s my day to blog, so here we are. 

Anyway. Every Wednesday, lately, in the Pickup office, we’ve been saying to each other, “Happy Sushi Wednesday, to all who celebrate.” May you find such a comforting phrase in times like these.
