What is The Pickup?
The Pickup is a culture, commentary and news website for people curious about Tulsa.
Is The Pickup local?
It absolutely is. Born from two established Tulsa media brands, Root and This Land Press, The Pickup is conceived, designed, built, staffed, written and edited by Tulsans. Expect to find us working on stories at your favorite local coffee shop.
What kind of journalism can I expect from it?
The fun, sharp, savvy, thoughtful, critical kind. We’re not a place for breaking news alerts or Tulsa boosterism. We are a place for feature stories, commentary, reviews, columns, guides, deep dives into niche oddities and perspectives on Tulsa life you won’t get anywhere else.
Who owns it?
The Pickup is owned by This Land Press and the editorial staff of The Pickup.
What is This Land Press?
This Land Press is a publisher and a retail brand based here in Tulsa that celebrates life and culture in middle America. It publishes this website, The Pickup, as well as books and documentaries. And from 2010 to 2016 it published This Land, a biweekly and then quarterly magazine specializing in longform stories about Oklahoma history, people and ideas. We’ve curated some of the best stories from This Land’s editorial run here, and will periodically republish more This Land stories to The Pickup as they become timely or relevant. Or whenever we just feel like republishing them.
Why do I have to pay for The Pickup?
To paint with a broad brush, publications like magazines and newspapers used to earn their revenue two ways: by selling advertising and subscriptions. In addition to driving us all completely insane, internet services like Facebook and Google hoovered up all the advertising dollars in the 2010s, totally upending business strategies that had proven reliable for decades. So that leaves subscriptions as the only dependable, sustainable source of revenue for publications.
Many publishers, broadcasters and news producers have pursued a nonprofit revenue model, which works fine so long as your perspective and publishing agenda aligns neatly with that of your funders, who often tend to be philanthropists. Much like This Land before us, we wanted The Pickup to remain as independent as possible, so that means cultivating a broad base of paying subscribers.

Why the name The Pickup?
The pickup truck is a friendly, noble and rugged little vehicle, perfect for navigating these bumpy Tulsa streets. If you're from here, you've probably spent some time in the bed of a pickup shooting the shit with your friends. We wanted our site to kinda feel like that.
