Merry Christmas To Our Pickup Subscribers

Our holiday card to you

Dear Subscribers,

Holy shit!

We made it. It’s The Pickup’s first Christmas. And we couldn’t have done it without you.

This year, we embarked upon a grand journey with a difficult objective: Bring alternative publishing back to Tulsa. The support of our publisher This Land Press is vital to the whole operation, but truthfully, the engine driving The Pickup is the, uh, piston, let’s say, of our many beautiful and smart subscribers.

Without you, The Pickup would have no reason for being! There would be no one to read some of our favorite articles of the year, like John Paul Brammer’s investigation into Legends Tower in Oklahoma City, Henry Roanhorse Gray’s spotlight on local LGBTQ+ gun clubs, Zack’s profile of local influencer @airplanefactswithmax, Matt’s takedown of Tulsa King, and Alicia’s art analysis of the big Cry Baby Hill statue. Without you, we would just be writing for large language models and Google SEO crawlers and we can’t imagine anything sadder than that.

We’re honored to have discerning readers like you, who choose every day to support a publication that says No to AI-produced writing, Yes to clearheaded and well-thought-out commentary on our city, No to easy boosterism, and Yes to paying writers and photographers for their work. Tulsa has plenty of billionaire-produced content, and we’re proud to not be part of it.

We’re going to take a short break through the end of the year and enjoy some hard-earned time with our families, our friends, our dogs and cats, and the insides of our homes. We hope you get to do the same. Come see us on Saturday at our event with John Paul Brammer, which is guaranteed to be a great, thoughtful, funny time.

One way you can help us through this break is by buying someone else a Gift Subscription. Right now, they’re discounted to just $45 a year. We’ve also discounted buy-it-for-yourself subscriptions, so if you’ve ever wanted to convince someone to subscribe to The Pickup, there’s no better time.

Anyway, happy holidays to all of you. You make this all possible. See you next year.

Matt, Alicia, and Zack
