I, like most everyone inhabiting my approximate internet algorithm, became enamored of comedian Chris Fleming’s performance clips last year, hooked specifically by this bit about snacks at Trader Joe’s that only women can see. It’s a hyperspeed, fantastical verbal and physical journey that references Ben Franklin’s autobiography, donkeys’ bisexuality, intergenerational knowledge, and a liberal dump of pop culture references aimed directly at mid- to elder millennials.
Fleming currently has close to a million combined followers across Instagram and TikTok, with the split spookily even at 450,000 or so each. He’s an everyman for people born in the 1980s, seemingly designed in a lab to appeal to people my age.
That said, I’ve been sure that Chris Fleming performing in an intimate room would terrify me, because he has an energy I cannot match. When his HBO special premiered in February, I found 75 minutes straight of his convulsive comedy exhausting. This raises questions to ask about him and so many viral comedians: Is this performance style format-specific? Does it work when he’s not playing to camera?
