IKEA will open a location in Tulsa soon, the Swedish homegoods store announced on Tuesday. IKEA Tulsa will be located in Tulsa Hills and will cover approximately 51,000 square feet. It's the retailer's first store in Oklahoma.

Many in Tulsa have spent years courting the international store. 2024’s “Tulsa Loves IKEA” initiative put Tulsans on a bus to Frisco, Texas to visit an IKEA store and collaborated with the chef conglomerate Et Al to create “Tulsmå,” a pop-up restaurant at Gathering Place which mimicked and elevated the famed Swedish meatballs and hot dogs served by the chain, among other Nordic-inspired fare.

“I wouldn’t hold my breath,” one Reddit user wrote of the initiative.

Regardless, the chain announced that IKEA Tulsa will open sometime this year, though the exact month is unknown.

“FY25 was a year of meaningful connection and growth despite a challenging external environment. We strengthened our ability to serve customers through new store formats, digital innovation and expanded rewards, all while reinforcing our commitment to communities and the environment,” said Rob Olson, Interim CEO of IKEA U.S, in a statement. “Looking ahead to FY26, we will build on this momentum, focusing on continued investment in the U.S. to make IKEA more affordable, accessible and sustainable.”

Three new locations were also announced on Tuesday, for Los Angeles, Chicago, and Fort Collins.

"Our team can't believe it," said Annie Chang, an organizer for the Tulsa Loves IKEA initiative. "They all really put their blood, sweat, and tears into making this happen. It's nearly two years later and we finally got the W. Every time we rally around something like this, we get a lot of pushback from people calling it "thirsty," and that's valid — but when's the last time you got something you really wanted, that was good for your community, without asking for it?"
